What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light is dark, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.
Isaiah 5:20 NLT

Friends define Character (a work in progress)

We indeed are known by the company we keep and the things that we enjoy.
Is there harmony in what you believe and what you do?
When there is – you have integrity.

14 Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?

15 What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?

16 And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said:
“I will live in them
and walk among them.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.

17 Therefore, come out from among unbelievers,
and separate yourselves from them, says the LORD.
Don’t touch their filthy things,
and I will welcome you.

18 And I will be your Father,
and you will be my sons and daughters,
says the LORD Almighty.”
– 2Co 6:14-18 NLT

Jesus prayed this prayer for us. But how is this even possible? What does this mean? What does this look like?

21 I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one–as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.
– Jn 17:21 NLT

We look at each other and see our differences. We wonder how we can be united in our Faith when we are so different. The problem is that we focus more on our differences than we do on our Faith. This is something our flesh does naturally to keep us apart. In our flesh, we can unite over the same cause or even similar likes and dislikes.
But when it comes to our Faith, we start to look for ways we are different rather than how we agree.
We look at the things we believe and start defining ourselves by our limited understanding rather than by the living Word of God.

5 This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all.
– 1Jn 1:5 NLT

In sports and in science, we team up with others who have common goals. We compare notes to try and find out how we can help each other reach a common goal. We look at our different talents in sports and our different areas of expertise in science to find how we can form a team. If we would apply this same way of thinking to the gospel, we could be more effective.

5 For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night.
– 1Th 5:5 NLT

We even define our mission is different ways. Some are trying to make disciples and others are trying to feed the hungry and clothe the naked. Some are trying to teach people who God the Father is and others are trying to get people to understand Jesus is love and still others are trying to get people to know Holy Spirit.
When Jesus prayed for us to the Father, he prayed that we would be one and be in tight agreement just like Jesus and the Father are one and are in agreement with each other (with one mind and one heart).

4 For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future.

5 There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

6 one God and Father of all,
who is over all, in all, and living through all.
– Ep 4:4-6 NLT

27 Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.
– Phl 1:27 NLT

8 Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.
– 1Pe 3:8 NLT

All of these scriptures speak of us being separate striving to live as one, but Jesus prayed for the Father to make us one. There’s great power in Who is doing the molding and making.
